Lampworking kilns

  • Under $200 a month to run

    About 930 kWh a month running 24/7 at 2100°F. That's under $200 even at 21¢/kWh, and about $65 at 7¢/kWh.

  • No burner, no gas line

The furnace heats with Kanthal A1 elements on 240V, 32 amps. No burner to tune and no gas line to run to it.

  • Elements that last

An SCR relay package roughly doubles element life. Plan on new elements and a heat ring about once a year.

What would you save switching to electric?

Put in what you pay for gas to run your furnace and what your power company charges. We'll estimate what a Glass Hive electric furnace costs to run and how long it takes to pay for itself.

Propane or natural gas for the furnace only. A glory hole still runs on gas.

This is an estimate. Your power use depends on how hot and how long you run, and on how well your studio holds heat. Element replacement is extra.
